Chapter Four

Good readers use context clues to help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.  One way to use the context is to focus in the sentences before and after the sentence containing the unfamiliar word.

o       Using the passage below, define what you think “landmark” means.

“Now that they were out of the woods, Lucy was sure they would see a familiar landmark.  But under the cover of snow, the roads and even some of the stone walls had disappeared.”

Landmark - _________________________________________________________________

Authors often use figurative language to help paint a picture in the reader’s mind.  They do this by comparing something from the story to an object or experience that most people can relate to (common background knowledge).

Personification – giving human characteristics to non-living objects

“The wind snatched her words and flung them over her shoulder.”

Simile – a comparison that points out some characteristic that two things have in common using “like” or “as”

“One…two…buckle my…shoe.”  Lucy was so thirsty that the words were like ashes in her mouth.”

To prepare for group, think about Lucy’s reaction to Simon in this quote…

“Put him down!” she shrieked at Simon, pulling at the hump on his back.”

Why would Lucy “shriek” at Simon after how helpful he had been?
